Volunteer -
Subject-specific teaching
Aims
StructureTOEFL, a Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a course designed to prepare students for their English proficiency examination, a necessity for any Tibetan wishing to secure a place in an American college/university. An experienced teacher coordinates the program and will give in-depth advice about the specific requirements of the program. To date, volunteers have been teaching various topics ranging from American political science, physical sciences, social sciences, anthropology, Egyptology, history, religion, and engineering, to name but a few. The expected standard is that the students will acquire an understanding of each topic on a par with a typical American student at pre-university level. The task of the volunteer is to meet the aims outlined above and to work closely with the program coordinator. Requirements
ResourcesUsually provided by the Centre. However, because of the specific nature of your teaching, you might need to bring your own notes. Signing upThe Centre plans a roster to ensure that the discussions are properly staffed. We have a list of the subjects we would like covered and we hope to use your expertise in our program. If you are unsure about your plans, just turn up at the Centre on your arrival in McLeod Ganj and inquire on the day.
AdviceVolunteers will need to have a good sense of humour and be ready to share their life experiences with the group. Many Tibetans are rather shy and will need careful coaxing. Some of the topics will require a basic understanding of mathematics and an ability to explain statistic data. All volunteers will need to be sensitive and considerate in their questioning.
