Since the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1949 the school system has dramatically changed. Hundreds of monasteries have been destroyed leaving entire communities and thousands of students without access to education.
The Chinese education system requires students to learn Chinese as their first language, leaving Tibetans with little education in their own language. The resettling of Chinese people in Tibet has left Tibetans as a minority in their own country. These and other inhumane conditions have forced hundreds of thousands of Tibetans to flee Tibet.
The Tibetans that have escaped to India generally have little education and lack the basic skills to communicate. Most come to McLeod Ganj to be near His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India’s Western Himalayas, and to receive a proper education. The Multi-Education Centre seeks to provide these newly-arrived Tibetans with the quality of education they desire and deserve.
